Online Baccarat History

Baccarat is a famous casino game that dates back approximately 500 years. Originally the game was known as a card game for aristocrats. However, today the casino game can be enjoyed by thousands of individuals that have access to the online version.

The game was invented by Felix Falguiere in the 1400's. He called the casino game "baccara", which when translated means "zero". The significance of this name correlates directly with the value of the cards. All ten cards and face depicted cards carry the value of zero (0). The spelling of baccarat we know today came about later when the game made its way to France.

In the original version of the game, the cards would be dealt by four different dealers. Here each of the players also had the opportunity to play the role of the banker. Bets were placed against fellow players as well as the bank.

From Italy, the game made its way to France where it was named Chemin de Fer. The game was most popular amongst King Charles VII and the noblemen who surrounded him. However, the game did spread across France among the French aristocracy. It remained there for some time before migrating across the ocean to South America.

While in the Caribbean, the casino game became known Punto Banco. While in Cuba, they added their Caribbean twist by allowing players to only play against the house and the role of the banker was taken on by the casino. Eventually, this baccarat variant became known as American Baccarat.

In the 1950's, the baccarat casino game was brought to the Sands Casino in Las Vegas. The game never took off well among the Americans. However, they did target the high rollers with this casino game. The minimum bets were set fairly high, and the tables were hidden in special casino rooms. These rooms came with posh décor.

Over time the game never transformed all that much. This all changed in the 1990's with the beginning of online casinos. Online casinos altered the way baccarat was known as now the tables were open to any player, not just high rollers. They were no longer hidden in secluded areas, and all players could experience the fun. In the online version of baccarat, there is only one dealer and bets are placed against the house.

Baccarat Game Rules

Baccarat is a fairly straightforward casino game that follows simple instructions and rules. There are only three possible outcomes, and the objective is for players to wager on either of these three; the player, banker, or tie. Essentially, what players are wagering on is that either of these three will have a hand total as close to nine as possible. To add up the total, playing cards will carry the following values:

  • Ace will be valued at one.
  • 10, Jack, King, and Queen will be valued at 0.
  • Cards 2 through to 9 will carry their face value.

However, should the total value of the hand be double digits, for example, 12, then the first digit will be removed to give you then total hand value. For example, if your two cards add up to 12, then the one will be removed to give you a total of 2.

To kick start the round both the dealer and player are dealt two cards each. Should a dealer's or player's total be 8 or 9, a natural would have been reached, and no other cards will be dealt. At the end of the round, if both the dealer and player have the same card values it will result in a tie.
